Colonoscopy care

A positive bowel-screening result
A positive bowel-screening (FIT) result means blood was found in the sample. It does not diagnose cancer. It does need a timely colonoscopy to find the cause.
Symptoms that have not settled
Unexplained bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia or a lasting change in bowel habit are worth looking at properly rather than watching.
History or surveillance
Previous polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and the findings from an earlier colonoscopy can also change when another procedure is due. Timing depends on your full clinical picture.
Dr Goutham Sivasuthan, Specialist Endoscopic Surgeon, reviews the referral, recent results, medicines and relevant health history before a procedure is confirmed. Many people can move straight to a procedure date. Others will need a consultation first, more information or a different specialist.
Heavy or ongoing bleeding, fainting, black or tarry bowel motions, severe abdominal pain, chest pain or a sudden serious deterioration need urgent medical assessment.
Call Triple Zero (000) in an emergency. Do not wait for an online booking or enquiry to be answered.

A positive FIT does not mean you have bowel cancer.
A positive FIT means blood was detected in the sample. Most people with a positive result do not have cancer, but the result needs a timely colonoscopy to find the cause. Polyps found during the procedure can usually be removed at the same time.
Bring the FIT report and any recent blood results to your appointment or referral. Read more about bowel screening, or send your GP the Sunshine Coast GP referral guide.

How do I arrange colonoscopy on the Sunshine Coast?
You can book online or send an enquiry now. Your date is confirmed after your referral has been reviewed.
Do I need a GP referral?
Yes. A current GP referral is needed for Medicare and for the clinical review. You can book or enquire first and send the referral afterwards, or ask your GP to use our online referral form.
Will I need a consultation before colonoscopy?
Not always. Dr Goutham reviews the referral and available records first. A consultation may be needed if the indication, medicines, health history or anaesthetic risk need more discussion. Consultations are by telehealth, so you do not need to travel for them.
Where will the procedure take place?
At Sunshine Coast Day Surgery, corner of Second Avenue and Memorial Avenue, Maroochydore QLD 4558. This is a private day hospital, not Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The visit guide has the hospital’s contacts and what to expect on the day.
Do Gold Coast or Brisbane fees apply here?
Not automatically. Fees may differ at Sunshine Coast Day Surgery. Ask for an estimate for your procedure and check what your health fund covers.
Is hospital pre-admission the same as registration?
No. The practice uses your registration details to arrange your care. The hospital has a separate admission form. Complete it when directed, using the instructions for your confirmed booking.
How will I receive my results?
Dr Goutham discusses the initial findings with you after the procedure, and the procedure report goes to your GP. If tissue or polyps go to pathology, we follow up with you and your GP once the result is back.
