Comprehensive Care for Gut Health

01

Colonoscopy

At Colonoscopy Brisbane, we provide comprehensive, patient-centred colonoscopy services designed to diagnose, prevent, and manage bowel conditions with precision and care. Each procedure is tailored to your individual needs, ensuring accuracy, safety, and comfort at every stage.

Using state-of-the-art endoscopic technology, Dr Goutham Sivasuthan — a Fellowship of the Australasian College of Surgeons-qualified, GESA-accredited endoscopic surgeon — performs detailed examinations of the large bowel to detect and remove polyps, identify sources of bleeding, and assess for early signs of bowel cancer.

Our focus extends beyond the procedure itself. From clear preparation guidance to expert follow-up, we ensure you fully understand your results and next steps. This open, supportive approach empowers you to take control of your gut health with confidence.

Colonoscopy remains the gold-standard test for bowel cancer prevention, and regular screening plays a crucial role in early detection and peace of mind.

Gut Health Assessment

gut health assessment involves a comprehensive consultation focused on identifying the underlying causes of digestive symptoms. During this appointment, Dr Goutham will take a detailed history of your symptoms, medical background, diet, medications and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to gastrointestinal issues.

Based on this assessment, a personalised investigation plan is developed to help determine the cause of symptoms and guide appropriate treatment. This may involve targeted diagnostic testing and, where appropriate, advanced imaging or specialised investigations to assess both structural and functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.

Gut health assessments are particularly helpful for patients experiencing persistent or unexplained digestive symptoms, including bloating, abdominal pain, altered bowel habits, reflux, food intolerance or symptoms suggestive of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

The goal of a gut health assessment is to take a holistic and evidence-based approach to digestive care, allowing investigations and treatments to be tailored to the individual patient rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. This personalised strategy helps identify underlying issues and supports the development of effective long-term management plans to improve gut health and overall wellbeing.

Endoscopy

For upper-gut symptoms such as reflux, heartburn, indigestion, nausea, or upper abdominal pain, a gastroscopy offers a clear, detailed view of your oesophagus, stomach, and duodenum. This minimally invasive procedure allows for early detection and treatment of common and potentially serious conditions including ulcers, gastritis, Barrett’s oesophagus, and coeliac disease.

Using high-definition endoscopic imaging, Dr Goutham Sivasuthan provides a precise and comfortable diagnostic experience under light sedation. Biopsies can be taken safely during the procedure when required, ensuring accurate diagnosis without additional appointments.

Rectal Bleeding

Rectal bleeding can result from a range of causes, including haemorrhoids, fissures, or polyps, and should always be properly assessed. At Colonoscopy Brisbane, we provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluation using advanced endoscopic imaging to pinpoint the exact cause quickly and safely.

As a minimally invasive and GESA-accredited surgeonDr Goutham Sivasuthan can both diagnose and treat haemorrhoids during the same colonoscopy, often avoiding the need for a separate procedure. This approach provides immediate relief, fewer hospital visits, and faster recovery. Our goal is to deliver efficient, compassionate care that ensures your comfort and long-term gut health.

PillCam (Capsule Endoscopy)

PillCam capsule endoscopy is a specialised test used to examine the small bowel, a section of the digestive tract several metres long that cannot be fully visualised during standard gastroscopy or colonoscopy. The test involves swallowing a small capsule containing a miniature camera, which travels naturally through the digestive system while capturing thousands of images of the small intestine. These images are transmitted to a recording device worn on a belt and later reviewed by your specialist. The capsule passes naturally through the body during a bowel motion.

Capsule endoscopy is commonly used to investigate iron deficiency anaemia when gastroscopy and colonoscopy have not identified a source of bleeding. It may also be used to assess unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding and small bowel inflammation or ulcers. By allowing direct visualisation of the small intestine, PillCam helps identify causes of symptoms that cannot be detected with standard endoscopic procedures.

05

Gut Microbiome Testing

The gut microbiome refers to the trillions of bacteria and microorganisms that live in the digestive tract and play an important role in digestion, metabolism, immune function and overall health. Changes in the balance of these bacteria can contribute to symptoms such as bloating, abdominal discomfort, altered bowel habits and food intolerance.

Specialised stool testing allows analysis of the gut microbiome to better understand the types and balance of bacteria present in the digestive system. These tests can provide insights into gut health and help guide a more personalised approach to managing gastrointestinal symptoms.

Gut microbiome testing may be helpful for patients experiencing persistent digestive symptoms, including bloating, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), food sensitivities, altered bowel habits, and unexplained gastrointestinal symptoms.

Based on the results of this testing, Dr Goutham can provide personalised dietary recommendations and targeted strategies to support gut health and microbiome balance, forming part of a comprehensive approach to digestive care.

Follow-Up Care

At Colonoscopy Brisbane, our care extends well beyond the procedure. We believe that lasting gut health comes from prevention, education, and proactive management. Through personalised follow-up consultations, we ensure every patient understands their results, recovery, and next steps for ongoing wellbeing.

Our team also promotes community awareness by providing educational resources that empower patients to take charge of their digestive health. By focusing on early detection, dietary guidance, and regular screening, we aim to reduce preventable conditions such as bowel cancer and chronic gut disorders.

This commitment to continuous care and prevention reflects our holistic approach — supporting each patient not only through treatment but in building a foundation for lifelong digestive wellness.
