A simple way for doctors to refer patients to Colonoscopy Brisbane
Refer Your Patient
Refer an adult patient for colonoscopy, gastroscopy or a specialist consultation with Dr Goutham Sivasuthan. Include the clinical question and relevant records so the referral can be reviewed and the appropriate next step arranged.

What to include
- The patient’s details and current contact number, together with any interpreter or communication needs.
- The reason for referral, symptoms and relevant examination findings.
- Previous endoscopy reports, pathology and other relevant investigation results, where available.
- Relevant personal and family history, medical conditions, medicines and allergies.
- Details of medicines or health conditions that may affect preparation, sedation or recovery.
- Private health cover, if applicable, and the patient’s preferred location.
For a Gold Coast procedure, please specify Miami Private Hospital and use the Gold Coast GP referral guide for the relevant local information.
What happens after referral
- Referral review. The team checks the information provided. Clinical suitability determines whether the next step is a consultation, a procedure or a request for further information.
- Contact with the patient. The team contacts the patient to explain the next step and arrange the appropriate appointment.
- Preparation and arrangements. Patients receive the instructions relevant to their booking, including preparation, medicines and admission details.
- Reporting and follow-up. The procedure report is sent to the referring doctor. Pathology results are communicated once available, with further management or follow-up as appropriate.
A referral or booking request does not by itself confirm that a procedure is suitable.
Procedure reports and pathology
The procedure report records the findings at endoscopy. If biopsies or polyps are sent to the laboratory, the pathology result follows separately once available. Follow-up depends on the findings and the patient’s clinical needs.
If a report has not reached you or you need to discuss the findings, please contact the practice on 07 3733 1551.
Urgent referrals
For a referral that needs prompt outpatient review, call the practice to discuss urgency. Do not use an online referral, email or fax as a substitute for emergency assessment when a patient is acutely unwell.
For relevant symptoms and referral information, see the rectal bleeding information.
