Is colonoscopy the right next step?
A GP may recommend colonoscopy after a positive bowel-screening (FIT) result, unexplained bleeding or iron-deficiency anaemia, a lasting change in bowel habit, or because of your personal or family history.
A positive bowel-screening result
A positive bowel screening test means blood was found in the sample. It does not diagnose cancer. Your GP will discuss further assessment, usually a colonoscopy.
Symptoms that have not settled
Speak with your GP about bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia or a lasting change in bowel habit.
Your history and follow-up
Previous polyps, inflammatory bowel disease and the findings from an earlier colonoscopy can also change when another procedure is due. The timing depends on your health history and previous results.
Colonoscopy, polyp removal and gastroscopy are all performed at Miami Private Hospital.
Colonoscopy can investigate symptoms and allow suitable polyps to be removed. Risks include bleeding, a tear in the bowel wall and problems related to sedation. The examination can occasionally be incomplete or miss abnormalities. Dr Goutham will discuss the benefits, risks and alternatives for your circumstances.
Heavy or ongoing bleeding, fainting, black or tarry bowel motions, severe abdominal pain, chest pain or a sudden serious deterioration need urgent medical assessment.

Your procedure
with Dr Goutham.
Dr Goutham Sivasuthan, Specialist Endoscopic Surgeon, reviews the referral, recent results, medicines and relevant health history before a procedure is confirmed. Many people can have the procedure without a separate consultation. For some people, a consultation, further information or referral to another specialist is needed first.

A positive FIT does not mean you have bowel cancer.
A positive FIT means blood was detected in the sample. Most people with a positive result do not have cancer, but the result needs a timely colonoscopy to find the cause. Polyps found during the procedure can usually be removed at the same time.
Include the FIT report and any recent blood results with your referral, or bring them to your appointment. Read more about bowel screening, or send your GP the Gold Coast GP referral guide.

questions.
Prefer to talk it through?

Do I need a GP referral?
Yes. A current GP referral is needed for Medicare and for the clinical review. You can request a date first and send the referral afterwards, or ask your GP to use our online referral form.
What does no-gap cover?
No-gap applies to Dr Goutham’s specialist fee when your cover is confirmed. Hospital excess, anaesthetist and pathology charges may still apply. We confirm your cover and costs in writing before your procedure.
Will I need a consultation before colonoscopy?
Not always. Dr Goutham reviews your referral and available records first. You may need a consultation to discuss why the test is needed, your medicines or health history, or the risks of anaesthesia. Self-funded patients have a pre-procedure consultation, which attracts a Medicare rebate.
Where will the procedure take place?
At Miami Private Hospital, 24 Hillcrest Parade, Miami QLD 4220. The visit guide has the hospital’s contacts and what to expect on the day.
When will I receive my results?
Dr Goutham discusses the initial findings with you after the procedure, and your GP receives the report the same day. If tissue or polyps go to pathology, we follow up with you and your GP once the result is back.
Can I have a gastroscopy at the same time?
Yes, if both tests are needed. They can be done in one session at Miami Private Hospital. No-gap applies to Dr Goutham’s specialist fee when your cover is confirmed; hospital excess, anaesthetist and pathology charges may still apply. The self-funded price is $1,950 for patients with a valid Medicare card. It includes the hospital, surgeon and anaesthetist; pathology and the pre-procedure consultation are separate.
