The short answer
What you pay will depend on whether you have private hospital cover, what your policy includes and the care you need on the day. Sunshine Coast fees are being finalised and are not yet published. Fees at our Brisbane and Gold Coast locations do not automatically apply at this venue.
Privately insured
Your policyYour hospital policy, any excess or co-payment and the hospital’s agreement with your fund all affect what you pay. Health-fund arrangements for this venue are not yet confirmed. Your written estimate will show what applies to you.
Self-funded
Your estimateYou can choose to pay for private care yourself. Self-funded terms for Sunshine Coast Day Surgery are confirmed in writing before you book. Ask for a written estimate covering the surgeon, hospital and anaesthetist, and check what it leaves out.
Public system
FreeNo cost for Medicare-eligible patients, but waits for non-urgent cases can be long. Your GP can advise whether the public pathway suits your situation.
Who charges what
A private colonoscopy usually involves several providers, and each may send its own account. Knowing who bills for what makes it easier to read an estimate and to ask your fund the right questions.
| Part of the cost | Who bills it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Surgeon’s fee | Dr Goutham Sivasuthan, through Colonoscopy Brisbane | The fee, the Medicare rebate and what your fund contributes |
| Hospital fee | Sunshine Coast Day Surgery | Whether your policy covers a day admission there, and any excess or co-payment |
| Anaesthetist’s fee | The anaesthetist, billed separately | Their fee and whether any gap applies with your fund |
| Pathology | The pathology laboratory, only if tissue or polyps are sent for testing | Whether the laboratory expects any out-of-pocket amount |
| Consultation | Colonoscopy Brisbane, only if Dr Goutham needs to see you first (by telehealth) | The fee and the Medicare rebate (a valid referral is needed for the rebate) |
Biopsies or polyp removal during the procedure can change the Medicare item and may add a pathology account. Your estimate will say which figures are fixed and what could change them.
How the written estimate works
Every patient receives a written estimate before a procedure is booked. There is no commitment until you decide to go ahead.
Referral review
Dr Goutham reviews your referral so the estimate matches the procedure you are likely to need.
Your details
Tell us your insurance status, your fund and policy, and any concession details.
Written estimate
We send the surgeon’s fee and expected rebates, and the hospital and anaesthetist contacts for their own estimates.
Your decision
Check the figures with your fund, ask us anything, then decide. Nothing is booked until you do.
Questions to ask your health fund
Health-fund arrangements for procedures with Dr Goutham at Sunshine Coast Day Surgery are confirmed with you in writing before your procedure. Your own policy still matters most, so these questions are worth asking now:
- Does my hospital policy cover a day-hospital colonoscopy at Sunshine Coast Day Surgery? Use the Medicare item numbers we give you.
- Does any waiting period apply, particularly if I joined or changed my cover recently?
- What excess or co-payment applies to a day admission?
- Does the hospital have an agreement with my fund?
- How does my fund treat the surgeon’s and anaesthetist’s fees, and could either leave a gap?
Note the date of the call and the reference number. A fund’s answer about one hospital or provider does not automatically apply to another.
Public or private?
Colonoscopy in a public hospital is free for Medicare-eligible patients. Waits for non-urgent cases can be long, and you may not be able to choose your specialist.
Private care lets you choose your specialist and venue, with the costs set out in writing before you decide. Your GP can help you weigh up which suits your situation. Cost should never stop you seeking care for worrying symptoms.
Allow for travel and time off work for you and the adult who takes you home. If you need your colonoscopy sooner than the next Sunshine Coast list, ask about our Brisbane locations.

Is colonoscopy bulk billed on the Sunshine Coast?
Sunshine Coast fees are confirmed in writing before your procedure. Your written estimate will show what Medicare and your fund pay and any amount you pay yourself. In the public system, colonoscopy is free for Medicare-eligible patients, though non-urgent waits can be long.
Will the fees be the same as Brisbane or the Gold Coast?
Not necessarily. Sunshine Coast fees are set separately and confirmed in writing before your procedure. Ask for an estimate that names Sunshine Coast Day Surgery.
If a gap arrangement applies, will I have no out-of-pocket costs?
Not necessarily. A gap arrangement covers one doctor’s fee. A hospital excess, an anaesthetist’s gap or a pathology charge can still apply. Your written estimate sets out each one.
Can I have a private colonoscopy without health insurance?
Yes, you can choose to pay for private care yourself. The procedure still needs to be suitable for you in a day hospital. Ask for a full written estimate and read what it includes before agreeing to treatment.
Does completing the hospital admission form confirm the price?
No. The hospital’s admission form is separate from your estimate. Read your written estimate and ask about any missing fees before agreeing to proceed.
